Power to Drive Workshop: Bringing Electricity to Life in Primary Schools

ElevationX believe the best way to understand science is to experience it. That’s exactly why our Power to Drive workshop delivers a high-energy, hands-on exploration of electricity, engineering and teamwork that quite literally puts learning into motion.

Designed for Key Stage 2 pupils, Power to Drive transforms classroom theory into practical discovery. Pupils work in small teams and use the engineering design cycle to build, test and improve their own miniature electric vehicles, applying their knowledge of circuits and components in a way that contextualises their classroom learning.

Turning Prior Knowledge into Practical Understanding

Power to Drive is carefully structured to complement and strengthen existing curriculum learning. Teachers consistently tell us how effectively the workshop reinforces prior knowledge while introducing new vocabulary and concepts in a hands-on manner.

“Great links with previous learning. Excellent range of activities – excellent set up with lots of equipment. Kids loved creating the cars and racing them. Even had time for a second go! Thank you.” Lyme Community Primary School

“A fun and hands on workshop that exposed the pupils to lots of new vocabulary related to electricity. Year 6 will have a good reference point to build on when we start our electricity topic next half term.” Southfields Primary School

Through interactive input and practical challenges, pupils explore key components of electrical circuits while developing confidence in scientific thinking. And of course, no electric car workshop would be complete without a race at the end, so pupils are challenged not only to get their car to go as far as they can, but also as quickly and efficiently as possible as well!

More Than Science – Building Life Skills

While pupils are focused on building and racing their vehicles, they are also developing essential skills, designed with the skills builder framework in mind:

  • Teamwork and communication

  • Problem-solving, adapting, logical thinking and resilience

  • Planning and applying theory to real-world contexts

  • Evaluating and improving designs with creative solutions

“Hands on, fun and practical. Team building and working together to create a vehicle – teaching them life skills along with science!” The Gatwick School

The workshop is inclusive, supportive and energetic, ensuring every child is involved and challenged at the right level. It can be adapted to different educational needs and requirements, and will be delivered in a manner that fits with the young people’s level of prior knowledge.

Fully Resourced, Smoothly Delivered

Having worked with schools for many years, ElevationX know full well how valuable (and stretched!) teachers’ time is. Power to Drive is fully resourced and delivered by experienced facilitators, with clear instruction and strong classroom presence. Aside from arranging a space for the workshop and bringing their class along, there is no requirement from teachers to do any organising!

“Quick communication when booking in dates. Engaging activities which the children could apply to their previous learning too. Brilliant sessions – thank you!” Great Malvern Primary School
“Good balance of interactive and input.” East Dene Primary

From initial enquiry to delivery day, schools can expect a professional, well-organised experience that runs seamlessly.

Funded Opportunities Available

Power to Drive can be booked as a paid workshop for your school.

In addition, there is a funded version available for certain primary schools connected to WME, Laser or YPO, in partnership with nPower Business Solutions. If your school has links to one of these organisations, please just let us know as we may be able to deliver our workshop at no cost to the school.
